If you are dating again after 50, there is a good chance a wonderful man has already crossed your path. And there is a good chance you walked right by him.
Not because anything was wrong with him. But because he did not set off fireworks the moment you met. I sat down with dating coach Lisa Copeland to talk about why that happens, and how to stop it.
The spark can lie to you
We are taught that real love announces itself. The racing heart, the instant pull, the sense that you cannot stop thinking about him.
But that jolt is not proof of a good match. Sometimes it is just familiarity wearing a mask. The unavailable man, the charmer, the one who keeps you guessing can all create a powerful spark, and it often fades into the same heartache you have felt before.
A steady, kind man may not light that same fire on day one. He may simply feel calm. And calm is easy to mistake for boring, when it is often the ground real love grows in.
Stop dating his potential
One of the quiet traps for women over 50 is falling for who a man could be instead of who he is.
You see the good heart under the excuses. You picture the version of him that shows up once he heals, once work slows down, once he is ready. And you sign up for a future he has not actually offered you.
A man will show you who he is early. Believe him the first time. The kindest thing you can do for yourself is to date the man in front of you, not the one you are hoping he becomes.
What lasts after the attraction settles
Attraction gets a relationship started. It does not keep one alive. When the first rush quiets down, three things tend to decide whether love lasts.
The first is character. Is he kind when no one is watching, honest when it costs him something, steady when things get hard.
The second is availability. Not just single, but truly open. A man who has room in his life and his heart for you, and who wants to be there.
The third is direction. You are not required to share every hobby. But you want to be walking toward the same kind of life, wanting the same sorts of things.
The confidence that draws a quality man
Here is what changes everything. A quality man is not drawn to a woman who is auditioning for him.
He is drawn to a woman who knows her own worth, enjoys her own life, and is warm without being anxious. When you stop trying to earn a seat at the table and simply take yours, the whole search changes. You stop chasing sparks and start noticing substance.
That shift, from performing to belonging, is the heart of what I teach in The Woman Men Adore.
The great man you keep hoping to meet may be closer than you think. The question is whether you will recognize him when the fireworks are quiet.
