What if knowing whether someone is right for you did not have to be so complicated? In this episode I react to relationship coach Matthew Hussey’s take on the question, and add what I have seen after years of sitting with women trying to answer it.
Matthew makes a good point about not overthinking it. I want to take that one step further, because most of us are not confused about the right person. We are confused about what “right” even feels like.
Right on paper is not right in your heart
You can make a list. Kind, stable, good job, wants the same things you want. He can check every box and still leave you feeling flat.
That is because a relationship is not a resume. A man can be right on paper and wrong in your heart, and no list will explain why. The pieces fit, but you do not feel like yourself around him.
The reverse happens too. Someone who does not match your old picture can feel like home the moment you are near him. The heart keeps its own records.
Why we confuse familiar with compatible
Here is the trap Matthew points at, and it is worth slowing down on. What we call our “type” is often just what feels familiar.
If love felt like chasing when you were young, a calm man can feel boring. If love felt like walking on eggshells, peace can feel like something is missing. We mistake the old ache for chemistry.
So the man who is genuinely good for you may not spark that familiar pull, simply because he is not repeating an old wound. Learning to tell familiarity from compatibility is one of the most freeing things you can do.
The one question that cuts through it
When a woman asks me how to know, I give her a single question. Can I be myself around this person?
Not the polished version. The real one. The woman who is tired sometimes, who has opinions, who does not have it all together. If you can relax into being fully yourself and he stays warm, you are close to something real.
If you find yourself editing, managing, performing, then a part of you already knows. The right person is the one around whom you get to stop auditioning.
What real compromise looks like
Being a good fit does not mean there is no compromise. It means the compromise does not cost you yourself.
Real compromise is two people bending toward each other. It is not one person slowly disappearing to keep the peace. If saying yes to him keeps meaning no to you, that is not compatibility. That is erasure.
The right relationship asks you to grow. It does not ask you to vanish.
If you want to become the kind of woman a good man recognizes and holds onto, that is the whole heart of The Woman Men Adore.
The right person will not always match your old picture. But you will know him by how easily you get to be yourself.
